The goals of the Surgery rotation (PGY-1 year) is to advance residents' knowledge in the following domains:
Common surgical problems frequently encountered in the outpatient settings
Indications for essential diagnostic studies used to evaluate patients with surgical conditions
Recognition of surgical emergencies that require urgent attention
Conditions/presentations are appropriate for specialty referrals to the following services:
Ophthalmology
ENT
Podiatry
Breast surgery
General surgery

Residents should attend all scheduled activities as outlined
Timely participation is expected for all activities and meetings
Residents should communicate any schedule changes (including sick time via email). Specifically:
If calling out sick for any external training sites: email the following: 1. Relevant faculty/preceptor 2. Dr. Pilipenko 3. Diana Suarez. appraising them of your sick day and stating your anticipated return date. Texting/emailing faculty/preceptor only is not an acceptable form for calling out sick.
If calling out sick for FHC: call Farrell Sick line (646-317-2303, by 7:30 am), email farrellsickline@nyp.org and CC Dr. Pilipenko. Include instructions for any patient rescheduling.
Please review the following points as these describe expectations for the rotation and will inform post-rotation performance evaluation.
If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss these with Dr. Pilipenko at the start of the rotation.
Email subspecialty clinic preceptors before the 1st Monday of the rotation with CC to Dr. Pilipenko. Introduce yourself and confirm your schedule dates. If you learn that preceptor is away/on vacation or if any information about the site changes, email Dr. Pilipenko within 1 business day. Information about each site is found under Training Sites sub-section.
Perform all tasks and responsibilities (as assigned by the preceptors/faculty) in a timely manner.
Promptly communicate with faculty/preceptor about any situations/circumstances/events that may impact your ability to complete tasks and responsibilities.
Recognize your limits in the knowledge/skills and seek help appropriately.
Follow NYP policies regarding professional conduct and attire for all rotation-related activities.
At the start of the rotation, discuss learning goals with faculty/preceptors/rotation supervisor.
Demonstrate openness to feedback and input.
